Minimally invasive TLIF, or transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion, is a procedure used to treat patients with refractory low back and radicular pain. During this posterior surgery (performed through the patient’s back), the spine surgeon will place a series of dilators through the muscles and soft tissue, directly above the diseased vertebrae, opening a small working channel through which the surgeon can access and repair the damaged or injured area while leaving the muscle tissue intact.
Your spine surgeon may recommend this advanced procedure if you are suffering from pain caused by:
- Degenerative disc disease
- Recurrent herniated discs
- Spinal instability
- Spinal trauma
Through appointments, consultations, and open dialogue reviewing any potential risk factors and medical history, including age and overall health, your spine surgeon will carefully examine and evaluate your individual needs and condition and work with you to determine whether minimally invasive TLIF is right for you.
